I absolutely fell in love with the series in The Gathering, and now that The Calling has come out, I can say I love it even more. This is a fantastic series. I had read a few reviews from others who said it was too much like Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers series. I have to completely disagree. Other than the fact that the kids in this book have been undergoing strange expiraments they aren't aware of... any similaries end there. This story was original and compelling. It had me hooked form the very first page and I ended up reading it in one sitting.
The characters I fell in love with in the first book are even better in the second. Maya is an amazing character. Smart, determined, and so independent. She knows how to fight for herself. She's resourceful. Daniel is a wonderful complement to her. Their friendship in these books is so endearing, and their conversations are some of my favorite moments in the story. Rafe is sort of an enigma. One part bad boy, one part scared little boy. I love the journey he is taking in these stories, and I can't wait to see what happens next with him.
The danger and suspense is ramped up to extreme conditions in this story. It was thrilling and fast paced and, in the end, a very satisfying read. I can't wait until the next book in this series comes out. Awesome story!
